Loeffler Takes Action to Secure the Ballot

Press Release

Date: Sept. 24, 2020
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Elections

U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) today introduced the Securing Our Elections Act to ensure fair elections and increase criminal penalties for bad actors who would attempt to interfere with Americans' ability to vote.

The legislation will hold accountable those who intentionally attempt to deprive or defraud Americans of a fair and impartial election process by increasing the current penalty of up to five years in prison to five to 15 years and up to a $100,000 fine. A violation could include any illegal and fraudulent ballot harvesting, voter intimidation or identification theft.

"Free and fair elections are a cornerstone of America's democracy, and they must be preserved," said Loeffler. "But the threat to our democratic institutions is increasingly evident even today, with a number of ballots in Pennsylvania being discarded without reason. With the potential for voter fraud and ballot tampering at our doorstep, we must do everything in our power to crack down on bad actors and ensure the integrity of our elections. I'm proud to lead this effort to hold those who attempt to interfere in elections accountable to the full extent of the law."
